Notes to accompany "Discipleship - Emotional Health , Week 1 "

“Copernican Revolution” describes a whole new way of looking at life. One of the major reasons that we as Christians are not effective disciples and witnesses is that we are emotionally immature.

“Ignoring our emotions is turning our back on reality.  Listening to our emotions ushers us into reality.  And reality is where we meet God.

Emotions are the language of the soul.”   The Cry of the Soul

Jesus – Both God and Human

Docetism – the belief that Christ had not really become human.
Council of Chalcedon in 415 A.D. – Jesus was fully God and fully human.
John 1:14  But when we read the Bible do we really believe this?

Garden of Gethsemane?  Here we see a fully human Jesus, emotionally depressed, mentally confused and spiritually overwhelmed. Luke 22: 39-46

Too many Christians are supposedly spiritually mature but remain as children emotionally.  They are unable to deal properly with anger, sadness or hurt.

The sad fact is that very little difference exists between God’s people in theChurch and those who claim no relationship to Jesus Christ.

The roots of the problem lie in a faulty spirituality.

Christians have often received teaching on

  • Prayer
  • Bible
  • Worship
  • Evangelism

No teaching on

Looking beneath the surface of their lives
    • How to break the power of the past
    • How to live in brokenness and vulnerability
    • How to know their limits
    • How to deal with grief and loss
    • How to follow the humble way of Jesus

How to follow the humble way of Jesus

Too often our inner world is not in sync with our beliefs. Matthew 23: 28 .

    Hypocrisy.  It means Play-acting.

Painful to look inside our hearts Matthew 15:19 Jeremiah 17: 9

Since Adam and Eve’s Fall mankind has bee divided from God, separated from one another, split internally within.
Shame, Loneliness, hiding, self-protection, lying and emotional pain mark Adam & Eve in Genesis 3 and everyone who has lived since then.

The Christian is called to become more like Jesus (Romans 8:29) This includes our emotions.

    Jesus expressed His emotions

    • He shed tears  Luke 19: 41
    • He was filled with joy  Luke 10: 21
    • He grieved  John 11: 33-35
    • He was angry  Mark 3 5
    • He felt sad   Luke 7: 13
    • He showed astonishment  Mark 6: 6
    • He felt distress Mark 3: 5

But His relationship with His Father freed Him from the pressures of those around Him.  He was not afraid to live out His own life and mission, regardless of other people’s agenda.
